shirin YadegarAs the lazy days of summer wind down, the buzz of back-to-school preparations begins to fill the air. August is a crucial month for ensuring a smooth transition from carefree vacation mode to the structured routines of the school year. Here’s how I tackle the challenge of preparing my kids for the upcoming academic year.

1. Organization is Key
One of the first things we focus on in August is getting organized. This includes everything from decluttering school supplies to establishing a daily routine. According to organizational experts, creating designated spaces for backpacks, lunchboxes, and school paperwork can significantly reduce morning chaos.

2. Setting Up a Homework Zone
To encourage good study habits right from the start, we carve out a dedicated homework zone at home. Choose a quiet area away from distractions. This helps our kids associate this space with focus and productivity. For example, I don’t allow my kids to do homework in their beds.

3. Getting Ahead on Schoolwork
Educational psychologists suggest spending a few hours each week on academic activities such as reading, math practice, or exploring educational apps. This helps prevent the dreaded “summer slide” and boosts confidence when they return to class.

4. Cultivating a Love for Reading
Reading is a cornerstone of learning, so we make sure to incorporate plenty of reading time into our entire summer routine. We visit the library regularly to stock up on books that match each child’s interests and reading level. Experts emphasize the importance of reading aloud to younger children and fostering a love for books through positive reinforcement and discussions about what they’re reading. For my tweens and teens we have done book clubs and based some of our summer dinners on deep discussions around books we are all reading so it’s fun and engaging for everyone at the table.

5. Establishing Sleep Routines
Good sleep habits are crucial for academic success, so we gradually adjust bedtimes and wake-up times throughout August. Pediatricians recommend maintaining a consistent sleep schedule even during weekends to help children feel well-rested and alert during school hours. We create a calming bedtime routine that includes reading together and limiting screen time before lights out. I highly recommend the meditation app calm or insight timer for your tweens and teens.

6. Open Communication and Goal Setting
As a mom, I believe in the power of open communication with my kids about their expectations and goals for the upcoming school year. We sit down together to discuss their aspirations, any concerns they may have, and strategies for achieving academic success. We must include our children in setting realistic goals and praising their efforts rather than just their achievements. This growth mindset will create resilient, hard working adults!
