Protect Yourself and Your Teens from UV Tanning

By Dannielle Crouch
Education Tan article photoI was in my teens when I got the fake tanning bug. I would purchase the unlimited monthly tanning packages that allowed for many tanning bed sessions to achieve that deep, dark tan. I began frequenting tanning salons in high school and continued well into my 20’s.

I was never informed of any health risks and certainly didn’t think I would be a victim of skin cancer. I have olive skin and dark hair and always tanned very easily in the sun. I didn’t fit into the high risk category. If you read about who is at risk it usually describes someone who has had many sunburns and very light complexion. That just wasn’t me.

The New Mommy Makeover

By Dr. Payman Danielpour and Dr. John Layke
Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Group

heath_aprilThe “Mommy Makeover” is not a new procedure. Pregnancy can take its toll on the female body causing breast deflation, tummy laxity and stretch marks. There are two parts to the traditional “Mommy Makeover”: (1) an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) to tighten the abdominal wall, remove the excess skin and markedly decrease the presence of stretch marks, and (2) either a breast augmentation or breast lift. During pregnancy the breasts swell – sometimes markedly – in preparation for the baby and milk production. After breast feeding stops, however, the breast tissue involutes and the overall volume deflates. (more…)

Why Physical Fitness is Important for Children

By Scott Myers

  • Obesity is the most prevalent nutritional disease of children and adolescents in the U. S.
  • A child’s potential to develop strength, endurance and physical skill increases at an exponential rate the first two years of life.
    • The more you encourage your children to be physically active during this period, the stronger and more energetic you can expect them to become; and the more quickly they will develop skills in using their muscles.

Benefits of Stimulation to the Infant Brain

By Octavia Lindlahr

education_marchWe live in a culture where “stimulation” clearly receives a negative response. Many pediatricians and experts will often label a baby who cries often or for prolonged periods of time “over stimulated”. However, we often give the brain little credit in this regard, and it should be acknowledged that stimulation and multi sensory play offer undeniable value to the overall development to the infant brain. Getting to Know Your Child’s Learning Style

By Nathalie Kunin

Education nathalie photoHave you ever been asked “How are you smart?” Probably not. Have you ever been asked “How smart are you?” Probably – or you’ve asked yourself this question? The same four words in a different order can make all the difference when attempting to quantify intelligence. We have many measures that tell us how smart we are in different subjects, but very few that tell us how we learn and process information. (more…)

By Andrea Thorpe, L.Ac.

andreathorpeRecent research is now pointing towards something that Chinese medicine has been explaining for thousands of years. 80% of your immunity potential lies in your gut. Event Planning

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the first issue of Los Angeles Mom Magazine. I am thrilled to have developed a site that will hopefully answer most of your mommy questions from how to treat the flu to planning your kids’ birthday parties.

Like yourselves, I am a Los Angeles mom who is always looking for hip, fun events to take my kids to. I am always searching for new, amazing entertainment and places for my kids’ birthday parties and don’t have hours to waste online.
The Event Planning section aims to help moms find all of their party needs with a click of a button. We will even have monthly articles by party planners and caterers on how to plan your events.

In March we will begin our listings section that will feature local entertainment companies and party places. Each of these sections will provide a short description of the company including a contact and price. Both adult and kids’ birthday parties can be searched by age and gender so you don’t have to spend hours looking through hundreds of listings.

I promise to only provide you with the best companies that I have personally seen or have been highly recommended by friends so that there will be no surprises.

If there are any party places or people you have used and think should be listed please email me at shirin@lamommagazine.com.
